Catch Cowichan Capitals on Camera as they Play for BCHL Championship

Chris Jaycox Production, named for its owner, is a Victoria-based video production company hiring and training students for a career in sports broadcasting. It covered the Cowichan Capitals 2025-2026 season, selling the games to traditional media outlets such as Shaw TV and online services such as YouTube.

Jaycox said that opportunities to work in broadcasting on the Island, and particularly in sports, are limited as most roles are occupied by people who tend to stay in them for many years. “It’s a fun, unique opportunity, and when you land it, you stick with it.”

The broadcast includes numerous roles, from camera operator to the on-ice shooter, to the highlights editor. Each of these roles is transferable to work at the professional level, and teams such as the Vancouver Canucks often have multiple people filling each role.

Camera operator Alonso Duran-Ortiz said this opportunity has clarified his career path. “I’ve always loved photography and I did a little bit of broadcasting on a smaller scale in Mexico City for a sports academy. This opportunity has just confirmed I want to do this for as long as I can.” Duran-Ortiz said what he’s learned in video production courses in Media Studies have sharpened his technical skills during the big games.

Jaycox’s team has been covering the home games of the Cowichan Capitals during one of their best seasons with 38 wins. The BC Hockey League mainstay has achieved the highest percentage of wins in team history. With a strong roster of players, the team has made the playoffs and secured home ice advantage for the first round.

“The environment in which you’re working is a happier environment when the team is winning. Management, ownership, players, fans, it’s all more positive,” Jaycox said.

While there may not be many entry-level opportunities in sports broadcasting, there are a number of teams across the Island who have broadcasting teams of their own.

The Cowichan Capitals played their last two regular season home games on April 3rd and April 4th and then face rivals from Nanaimo, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Cranbrook, Prince George, Chilliwack, Sherwood Park and Brooks until the end of the month. The Cowichan Capitals are looking to win their first BCHL championship.
